Noon Icon: Melinda Gates

Melinda Gates had an impressive career in tech before her life as a philanthropist and campaigner. Now is her next stage.

Melinda and Bill Gates have announced that they are divorcing after 27 years of marriage. They had decided “they didn’t want to grow old together.”

Of course, the end of a relationship is always sad but choosing to redesign your life into something happier and more fulfilling, at any age, is incredibly inspiring, which is why we’re celebrating Melinda Gates as a Noon Icon.

Melinda Gates joined Microsoft in 1987 as a product manager, rising to general manager. The two married in 1994 on the Hawaiian island of Lanai. Together they formed the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, with an endowment around $50 billion (around £36 billion), dedicated to fighting poverty, disease and inequality.

She has become known for her philanthropic work around the world. The couple have been working over the past year, fighting against Covid-19 and spending more than $1 billion to address the pandemic.

Here’s to Melinda Gates, and her next chapter.
